Check out our exclusive interview with Trey Songs :

Listening to R&B singer Trey Songs sing along to BIG’s classic “Big Poppa”, it was evident that he was a true hip-hop fan. Our interview at the Shark Bar in Manhattan began with Trey serenading me: “living better now Gucci sweater now drop top BM I’m the man girlfriend, honey check it you tell yah friend to get with my friend and we can be friends, sh*t we can do this every weekend, is that alright with you. Keep banging, I love it when they call me Big Poppa”…

IT: On your track, “Wonder Woman”, you sing and rap. Are you going to be doing more of that in the future?

Trey: I was actually rapping before I started singing. I was always a big hip-hop fan, growing up listening to artists such as BIG and Nas. “Wonder Woman” is my new single and I get to show two sides of Trey.

IT: What have you been up to lately?Trey: Been working on my second album for the last 10 months. Plus, I have a record out in Japan, Mexico and Germany, with other artists out there. Actually, I am going to Canada soon to shoot a video with an artist from out there.

IT: What producers you are working with on your new album?

Trey: I have been working with R. Kelly, Jimmy Jan and Terry Lewis, Static and Troy Taylor, who is my mentor/producer. I also have some collaborations with Jim Jones and Bun Bee.

IT: Who are you rocking with – Jay Z or Jim Jones?

Trey: What you mean ‘who I’m rocking with’? That’s they beef. As long as it don’t interfere with my paper, I am good. Jim is on a track with me and it’s a hot track.

IT: Where have you been recording this new album?

Trey: I have recorded everywhere from my bedroom to the living room, hotels, Miami, LA, Atlanta, NY, Dallas. It really don’t matter where I’m at physically; it’s mentally whatever hits me at that time. And I feel like my first album was introducing me to the world, family dude trying to make it for mines. Now that I’m here, the second album is about growth and where I am at this phase in my life.

IT: Now that we know hip-hop is your first love, tell us how you became the sultry R&B singer?

Trey: I never was really into R&B before I started singing. I would play around with singing around the way but it was when I met my mentor/producer Troy Taylor – that’s when he took it over the top and had me studying other artists. Growing up in the ghetto [in Petersburg, Virginia] at that time, everyone was into hip-hop. I grew up on hip-hop. That’s why my voice is so soulful and sultry ‘cause I studied all the old greats such as Stevie Wonder, Carpenters, The Clark Sisters, Isley Brothers and Luther Vandross. Now that I am back rapping - that actually came about trying to get records done ‘cause rapping is so easy for me. Actually, I can finish a rap record a lot easier than a singing record.

IT: So do you do a lot of dancing in your live acts?

Trey: Dancing ain’t me really; I mean I two-step in the clubs and if I get a few drinks in me I might do a little more, but I will let Chris [Brown] & Omarion do that. It’s a lane for that but that’s not me. I might lose my breath and it might not look cool and you know I got to look cool at all times.

IT: How old are you?

Trey: I’m 22.

IT: Is that your real age or your age your publicist told you to tell us?

Trey: Nah, I’m 22 – I graduated high school in 2002.

IT: Are any of your family members musicians?

Trey: Well, I was looking through some albums the other day at my dad’s house and actually me and my dad is just now getting cool. Recently, he was just showing me picture of him when he used to sing. And my mama sings a bit but don’t take credit for it and my grandmother sang in the church choir so I guess that’s where it comes from.

IT: If you could work with anybody, who would it be?

Trey: Jay Z.

IT: What about a female artist?

Trey: Beyonce. I think, vocally, she’s incredible. Have always looked up to her. You can tell how hard she works at what she do. There’s no flaws – she takes it very seriously.

IT: Who is Trey Songs listening to in his ride?

Trey: Man, I listen to everybody from Jeezy to the Stylistics; all music.

IT: So what sets you apart from other R&B artists?

Trey: I think it’s a lane for everybody I feel like I’m in my lane and I am driving the fastest and I am driving the best car. If you wanna hop in with me, you hop in; if you don’t, you get left.
